🤗 Have you made any good resolutions for 2024?
Do you want to say goodbye to certain bad habits and make room for new, more virtuous ones?
It's the same thing every New Year.
Sometimes shouted from the rooftops, sometimes carefully guarded like a secret, resolutions and desires for change are all around us as we take stock of the past year. The month of January opens like a new page, and what better way than to write new adventures in a new notebook!
This tradition is not new. As far back as Roman antiquity, under Julius Caesar, the Romans made offerings and sacrifices to the god Janus, "god of doors and beginnings", promising to become "a better citizen".
This year, the French government website www.notre-environnement.gouv.fr, a portal on environmental and sustainable development issues, is offering French citizens a series of good resolutions to help the planet: "less driving, more cycling, less wasted food, less waste and more sorting, a more eco-responsible look", etc.
According to an IPSOS survey, the list of French people's resolutions for 2024 is very similar to that for 2023, with regular physical activity or sport, more time spent with friends and family, and more time for relaxation coming top of the list. Sleeping more, eating better, quitting smoking or going on a diet are also frequently mentioned.
There are few scientific studies to measure the actual effectiveness of these resolutions. It has been established, however, that negative wording is often less effective ("stop doing something" rather than "start doing something") and that resolutions that are less self-focused, i.e. more concerned with relationships with others, are more likely to be lasting...
Another piece of advice is that it's easier to tackle a subject with realistic goals (losing 20kg in a week seems highly unlikely, if not impossible, not to mention dangerous). In the same way, it's a good idea to talk to others about your resolutions. This way, your friends and family can regularly ask you about your New Year's wishes, forcing you to stick to them.
Have you already made your good resolutions for 2024?
While these resolutions depend on the individual, our international team would like to help even more international students with their plans to study in France, giving them the peace of mind they need to make the most of this major project!
Happy New Year 2024 to everyone, and dare to undertake all your projects!
